DECEASED BRETHREN

At this point we do not know a lot about Andrea Astrico, who died on 15 February 1879, aged 55. He was a member and Past Master of Vancouver Lodge, which merged with Quadra Lodge in June 1877 to form Vancouver & Quadra Lodge, No. 2.

We also know that Andrea Astrico was a native of Caino, Italy and operated a hotel in downtown Victoria. The Vancouver & Quadra Lodge, No. 2 membership records show only “Astrico, Andrew, Hotel-Keeper.”

The contemporary newspaper reports shown below also refer to him as “Andrew” so it appears he also used the name “Andrew” as an anglicized version of his own name, Andrea.

Here are the reports of Andrea (Andrew) Astrico’s death and funeral taken from contemporary Victoria newspaper reports:

Under “Deaths”:

“At his residence, in this city, on the 15th inst., Andrew Astrico, a native of Caino, Province of Como, Lombardy, Italy, aged 55 years.

The funeral will take place from the Masonic Temple on Tuesday, 18th inst., at 2 p.m. Friends are invited.”

“The late Andrew Astrico’s funeral will take place to-day. He was a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellows’ Orders and the Pioneer Society. A full representation of all these organizations will follow the remains to the grave.”

“The funeral of the late Andrew Astrico took place from the Masonic Temple yesterday afternoon. It was numerously attended by Masons, Odd Fellows and Pioneers. The cortege was headed by Haynes’ band, and the remains were interred in Ross Bay cemetery. W. Bro. R.B. McMicking read the funeral service of the Masonic Order.”
