George Glover (1846-1928) was a building contractor who worked on some of Victoria’s best known buildings. He also served as a School Trustee and an alderman in Victoria City Council in 1896.
He was a Past Master of Vancouver & Quadra Lodge No. 2 in Victoria.

“EARLY BUILDER PASSES AWAY
Mr. George Glover, Former Alderman and Trustee, had Active Business Career in Victoria
LIVED IN CITY FORTY YEARS
The death of Mr. George Glover yesterday afternoon at the advanced age of eighty-two years, removes another of the pioneers of the city. For forty years Mr. Glover had been a resident of this city, following an active career as a building contractor for a number of years. He also took a lively Interest in the municipal affairs of Victoria serving as a school trustee. and in 1896 was a member of the City Council In the capacity of alderman.
He was a native of Bldeford, Eng. and when only nine years of age came to Canada with his father’s family. They settled in the County of Bruce. Ontario. Forty years ago Mr. Glover came to this city, and since has been a resident of Victoria.
BUSINESS CAREER
As a partner with Mr. J. K. Thomas, Mr. Glover followed building contracting for years, the firm erecting some of the best known of the older structures in the city. Among these was the laying of the foundations for the present Parliament Buildings, the Turner Beeton block on Wharf Street, and Craigdarroch, which is now Victoria College, were also built by him.
With the advance in years Mr. Glover gave up the active work of construction. but his services were called into requisition quite constantly as clerk of works in the erection of other buildings in the city. These Included the old Five Sisters block since destroyed by fire; the Court House; the Carnegie Library Building, and the Margaret Jenkins School.
Mr. Glover formerly resided at 2634 Quadra Street [note: no longer extant but would have been on the west side of Quadra between Kings and Hillside]. Of late he has been making his home with his daughter Mrs. F. W. Baylis, 330 Robertson Street.
PROMINENT MASON
He was a life member of Vancouver Quadra Lodge No 2. A. F. & A. M. and in 1896 he was master of the lodge. Mr. Glover took a very deep interest in the affairs of the craft, and will be burled with Masonic honors.
Mrs. Glover predeceased him in October of last year.
The late Mr. Glover is survived by two daughters, Mrs. C. J. Lang, of Vancouver. and Mrs. F. W. Baylis of Victoria; a sister Mrs. J. K Thomas, of Wellington Avenue, Victoria and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday at 2 o’clock from the Sands Funeral Chapel under the auspices of Vancouver-Quadra Lodge. No 2 A.F.& A.M. Rev R. W. Lee will officiate, the remains being laid to rest In the family plot at Ross Bay Cemetery.

“GLOVER – The funeral services for Mr. George Glover, who died last Saturday, took place yesterday afternoon from the Sands Funeral Chapel. Relatives and many friends were present and more than forty brother members of the Masonic craft turned out in a body to show their last respect. Many beautiful flowers testified to the high esteem in which Mr. Glover was held. Rev. F.W. Lee officiated. The service at the graveside was conducted by the worshipful master G. Sydney Carr. The hymns sung were “Abide With Me” and “Peace, Perfect Peace.” M.W. Bro. W.S. Terry, M.W. Bro. Stephen Jones, R.W.B. W.P. Marchant, W. Bro. Capt. C.I. Harris, W. Bro. W.J. Gower and Bro. Robert Dinsdale acted as pallbearers and the remains were laid to rest in the family plot at Ross Bay Cemetery.”
