William Alexander Anderson (died 1911)

William Alexander Anderson was a member of Vancouver & Quadra Lodge No. 2 in Victoria.

He served as a member of Victoria’s police department. Following his retirement from the police he held the license for the Regent Saloon at the intersection of Douglas Street and Johnson Street in downtown Victoria and was the licensee of the Regent Saloon at the time of his death in October, 1911.

William Anderson lived with his family at 714 Queens Avenue near downtown Victoria. The family’s house has since been demolished but here is a map showing where it once stood:

Here are some newspaper reports of the death and funeral of William Alexander Anderson:

“Anderson – The funeral of the late Mr. William A. Anderson took place from the family residence, 714 Queens avenue, yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. The funeral was conducted by Vancouver & Quadra Lodge No. 2, A.F. & A.M., under the personal direction of Worshipful Master J.C. McNeil and Secretary R.B. McMicking. The latter conducted a beautiful service at the house and at the gravesite. The members of Victoria Aerie No. 12, Fraternal Order of Eagles were present in large numbers and under the direction of President T.F. Gold paid their last respects to their deceased brother. The Scottish societies were represented by Chief P.J. Riddell and the members of the Highland Pipe Band in costume, who carried their pipes. The pallbearers included Chief of Police Langley, Detective Inspector Perdue and other old comrades of the police force who knew the deceased when he was a member of the force. Among others present were Superintendent of Police Colin Campbell, Inspector Palmer and an extremely large gathering of friends. The late Mr. Anderson leaves to mourn his death a widow and daughter in this city; Police Detective Anderson of Vancouver; a father, brother and six sisters in Aberdeen, Scotland and another in Victoria. Three cousins, Mrs. James Anderson and three sons also survive in Australia. Deceased had a wide reputation as an athlete, having held the weight throwing championship [shotput?] of California from 18?? to 18?? [illegible in original] and repeating this in Victoria while a member of the Victoria police department. Among the floral offerings received were the following: Compass, Masonic Lodge, Vancouver & Quadra Lodge No. 2 A.F. & A.M., wreath; F.O.E. Victoria Aerie No. 12, wreath; old comrades, Victoria Police force, wreath; Pither & Leiser, wreath [the remainder is illegible in the copy we accessed.; we will look for another copy]

“NOTICE

NOTICE is hereby given that applications will be made to the Board of Licensing Commissioners at the next sitting for a transfer to Daniel C. McCarthy of the license to sell spirituous and fermented liquors at the “Regent Saloon”, situate at the corner of Johnson and Douglas Street, in the City of Victoria, British Columbia, which was issued to William A. Anderson, deceased.
