DECEASED BRETHREN OF VICTORIA MASONIC LODGES

Alexander Gilmore McCandless (1861-1939) was a member of Victoria-Columbia Lodge No.1 in Victoria. He served as Mayor of Victoria in 1902-1903.

In 1887 he went into partnership with his uncle, Alexander Gilmore, in a retail clothing business named Gilmore & McCandless located at 557-559 Johnson Street.

Gilmore & McCandless operated in the extant building at 557-559 Johnson Street.

He also formed a partnership with D. E. Campbell which retained architect Thomas Hooper to design and build 576-580 Johnson Street in 1899.
