1420 Broad Street

BUILDINGS ASSOCIATED WITH FREEMASONS IN GREATER VICTORIA

1420 Broad Street was built in 1907 by architect Francis Rattenbury as an office and warehouse for the Brackman-Ker Milling Company. It is currently a broadcasting facility owned by Rogers Communications, which houses Victoria’s CTV affiliate, CIVI, and radio stations KOOL-FM (107.3 FM) and C-FAX 1070 (1070 AM).

The principal of the Brackman-Ker Milling Company was David Russell Ker, a member of Victoria-Columbia Lodge No. 1.

The building is listed on the Canadian Register of Historic Places.

A Brief History of 1420 Broad Street

This building at 1420 Broad Street was built in 1907 by architect Francis Rattenbury for the Brackman-Ker Milling Company.

The Brackman-Ker Milling Company was a prominent firm in Victoria business in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was formed in 1877 by Henry Brackman. In 1882, David Russell Ker became Brackman’s business partner.

 

In 1889 Brackman-Kerr Milling Company built a warehouse at 1407 Government Street. In 1907 the company built this building as its head office and warehouse.

After the Brackman-Ker Milling Company left this location, this building became a commercial building. For many decades it was a furniture store.

The building is currently used as a broadcasting facility by Rogers Communications. The broadcasting operations include Victoria’s CTV affiliate, CIVI, and two radio stations: KOOL FM (107.3) and C-FAX (1070).
